Top pick for most buyers

Tom Ford Noir Extreme

7.4/10
Amber / GourmandEDPStrong longevityFall & winter
Noir Extreme is the one to buy first. It is the easier of the two to like and the easier of the two to wear — cardamom, nutmeg and saffron over a kulfi accord of pistachio and cream, landing on vanilla, amber and sandalwood — and it is the Tom Ford people actually stop to ask about. Buy Ombré Leather instead if you want range: it is marked year-round where Noir Extreme is a fall and winter bottle, and it is the more grown-up, less sweet of the two. Rasasi Hawas Venom is the budget pick if neither price works.

Two different answers to "which Tom Ford"

These are the two bottles most people end up choosing between in the Tom Ford men's line, and they are not close relatives. Noir Extreme is a creamy, spiced near-gourmand: cardamom, nutmeg and saffron up top, a heart built on an accord of kulfi — the Indian pistachio-and-cream dessert — and a base of vanilla, amber and sandalwood. It is almost edible without tipping into dessert, and it is the single easiest bottle in the house to wear in front of other people. Ombré Leatheris the most wearable leather in mainstream perfumery: cardamom over supple leather and jasmine sambac, grounded in amber, moss and patchouli. Sonia Constant's 2018 composition is smooth rather than smoky, which is why it works on a Tuesday as well as a Saturday.

The short of it: Noir Extreme is the compliment machine and the better first purchase — sweeter, warmer, more immediately likeable, and a fall-and-winter bottle. Ombré Leatheris the more versatile and more adult of the two — drier, suede-soft, year-round, and the one that reads as a decision rather than a crowd-pleaser. Both sit in Tom Ford's Signature line rather than Private Blend, so both are the cheaper half of the house.

Four questions that settle it

  • Do you want to be complimented or respected? That sounds glib and it is genuinely the decision. Noir Extreme is the one strangers remark on; Ombré Leather is the one that makes you smell like you know what you are doing. Both are good outcomes and they are different outcomes.
  • How many months a year will you wear it? Ombré Leather is listed year-round and genuinely carries spring and fall. Noir Extreme is a cold-weather bottle — the cream and vanilla get heavy in heat. If this is your only bottle, that gap matters.
  • How do you feel about sweetness? Noir Extreme is not a dessert fragrance, but it is sweet, and people who dislike sweet scents reliably dislike it. Ombré Leather has essentially none. This is the fastest way to eliminate one of them.
  • What do they cost today? The two are close enough on price that it rarely decides anything, and they move. The table at the top of this page reads both live from the Amazon Product API with the date stamped beside the figures — decide the scent question first, then check the number.

Who each one is for

Buy Noir Extreme if this is your first Tom Ford, if you want the bottle most likely to get a reaction, or if your wear window is October through March. It is the safer purchase in the sense that more people will like it — and it is also the one more people already own.

Buy Ombré Leather if you want one bottle to cover more of the year, if sweetness is not for you, or if you want a leather fragrance you can actually wear to an office. It is the more interesting composition and the less obvious choice. It also leads our best leather colognes ranking.

Buy Rasasi Hawas Venom if neither price works. It is the budget pick on this page: incense and labdanum over leather, closing on incense, vanilla and patchouli — dark, smoky and resinous, and the loudest of the three. It is not a substitute for either Tom Ford and we are not presenting it as one; it is the cheap way to find out whether you want smoke and leather in your rotation at all. One honest caveat: it is a 2026 release, so early owner ratings are very strong but the sample is still small.

Compliments, dates and cold-weather evenings

Tom Ford Noir Extreme

Amber / GourmandEDPStrong longevityFall & winter
7.4/10

Tom Ford's compliment machine. Cardamom, nutmeg and saffron open it; the heart is built on an accord of kulfi — the Indian pistachio-and-cream dessert — and the base is vanilla, amber and sandalwood. Creamy, spiced and almost edible without tipping into dessert, and the single easiest Tom Ford to recommend without a sample.

Pros

  • The creamy saffron-pistachio-vanilla accord is distinctive and very widely liked
  • Among the best-performing bottles in the Signature line by owner reports
  • One of the lowest per-ounce prices in the house

Cons

  • Sweet enough that a hot office or a summer afternoon is the wrong setting
  • Enough people wear it now that it no longer reads as unusual

Don't buy this if…

…you dislike sweetness or need one bottle for all twelve months — this is a cold-weather specialist.

Sonia Constant's 2018 composition is smooth rather than smoky, which is why it works on a Tuesday as well as a Saturday — and it sits in Tom Ford's Signature line rather than Private Blend, which is why it is the cheapest fragrance per ounce on this page despite the sticker on the big bottle.

Pros

  • Leather without the ashtray — clean, suede-like and genuinely versatile
  • Reported wear time of eight hours or more; the house's most consistent performer
  • Unisex by design and very widely complimented

Cons

  • The jasmine-and-violet lift reads floral to some noses, which divides opinion
  • Still designer-plus money for what is structurally a simple composition

Don't buy this if…

…you want the smoky, tarry, birch-driven kind of leather — this is the soft, polished reading of the material.

Rasasi Hawas Venom For Men

Leather / IncenseEDPVery strongFall & winter
7.4/10

The 2026 release, and the first Hawas that is not a freshie at all: incense and labdanum over leather, closing on incense, vanilla and patchouli. It borrows the name and goes somewhere completely different — dark, smoky and resinous. Early owner ratings are very strong but the sample is still small, so treat the consensus as provisional rather than settled.

Pros

  • Smoky incense-and-leather structure that is rare at this price
  • Early owner reports put performance at the top of the house
  • Completely distinct from the rest of the Hawas line

Cons

  • Only a handful of published owner ratings so far — the verdict is early
  • Nothing to do with the fresh Hawas accord despite the shared name
  • Heavy and smoky, which rules out warm weather and most offices

Don't buy this if…

…you are buying it because you liked Hawas; the name is the only thing these two share.

Which should you buy?

If you can only own one and you have no strong feeling either way, buy Noir Extreme. It is the more likeable fragrance, the more reliable compliment-getter and the easier introduction to a house whose reputation is for being difficult. The honest limitation is range: it is a cold-weather bottle and it will feel wrong in July.

If you already own something sweet, or if you want the bottle you will still be reaching for in three years, buy Ombré Leather. Smooth leather is a harder thing to get right than creamy spice, and this is the best-executed example at mainstream money — plus it is the only one of the two you can wear in spring. Where both sit against the wider field is covered in best gourmand colognes and best leather colognes respectively.

And if the real question is which Tom Ford to buy rather than which of these two, two more pages are worth reading: our Tobacco Vanille vs Oud Wood comparison covers the Private Blend pair, and Tom Ford Oud Wood alternatives covers what to buy if the Private Blend price is the obstacle.

How we picked

We do not run a testing lab — and we say so

Our rankings compile published note pyramids and concentration data, aggregate owner and community longevity and sillage reports, and apply a published rubric to every bottle — with first-hand impressions only where they're genuine. The scores are judgments from that research; they are not lab measurements, and we do not claim to have smelled every batch. Formulations change; where a claim came from someone else, we name and link them in Sources.

Questions

Frequently asked

Which is better, Tom Ford Noir Extreme or Ombré Leather?
Noir Extreme for most buyers — it is sweeter, warmer and the more reliable compliment-getter, and it is the easier first Tom Ford. Ombré Leather is the better bottle if you want range and restraint: it is marked year-round, it has essentially no sweetness, and smooth leather is a harder thing to execute well. They score identically on our rubric for a reason.
Do Noir Extreme and Ombré Leather smell similar?
No. They share a house and a cardamom opening and almost nothing else. Noir Extreme is a creamy, spiced near-gourmand built on a pistachio-and-cream accord over vanilla and sandalwood. Ombré Leather is a dry, suede-soft leather with jasmine sambac over amber, moss and patchouli. Smelled side by side there is no confusing them.
Which one lasts longer?
Effectively a tie. Both are eau de parfums with strong longevity in aggregate owner reports, and neither has a performance problem. If you want the loudest of the three bottles on this page it is actually the budget pick, Rasasi Hawas Venom — though as a very recent release its reports are based on a smaller sample. Our longevity and sillage guide explains how we read those numbers.
Can you wear either one to the office?
Ombré Leather, comfortably, at one or two sprays — it is smooth and close enough to be fine in shared air, and it is one of very few leather fragrances we would say that about. Noir Extreme is warmer and sweeter and will be noticed; it is not a scandal at two sprays in winter, but it is an evening scent by temperament. See best office cologne for a shortlist built specifically for that.
Is there a cheaper alternative to either?
Rasasi Hawas Venom is the budget pick on this page for the leather side — incense, labdanum and leather for a small share of the Tom Ford money, though louder and smokier than Ombré Leather's suede. For the Noir Extreme side, Lattafa Khamrah is the cheapest route into creamy spiced sweetness; it is a dessert gourmand rather than a pistachio-cream accord, so treat it as the same mood rather than the same scent. Both appear in our best cologne under $50 list.
